New & Noteworthy Restaurants in Salt Lake City

This is different. It's not about a restaurant, it's about a product. A beverage that was given to me to try touting "All-Natural", Good For You Ingredients. Haven't heard or read that in awhile, what - six hours? Well, I tried one of the three samples given to me, and I must admit, I am hooked! I Love It! The name of the bottled Juice is La Hacienda Aguas Frescas! The name is Spanish for Fresh Water. I had the Mango, a super-fruit from the tropics delivered a taste of paradise. A sweet escape into a moment of bliss. Besides straight out-of-the-bottle as a juice drink, I am told it makes a delightful mixture with numerous alcohol options such as rum. Can't wait to try all of their flavors. Available now at all Anayas Market locations, Ekamai Thai Curry and coming soon to the Whole Foods Markets throughout Utah. Great Comfort Food!
Guzzi's Hamburgers & Fries
Salt Lake Citys Best Burgers

This tiny joint on 8th South and 2nd East has two Moto Guzzi motorcycles on the roof, and a menu that's less fancy than some street carts, but when the burgers are this good (and reasonably priced, and includes fries) it hardly matters. They have some of the best fresh made burgers and fries in Salt Lake! Expect a wait for your burger for two good reasons, first, it doesn't get cooked until after you order it. And second, this place is getting more and more popular everyday. Two of my favorites, the blue bacon burger was amazing, and when it seems everyone cooks garlic burgers these days, and instead of sprinkling some garlic salt and calling it a garlic burger, these guys mince fresh garlic and mix it into the meat before they cook it. It's easy to see that the owners have a dedication to creating a great-tasting "cooked-to-order" burger. And I applaud them. Keep it up Josh. Hint, request the grilled onions, yum.

Bakery and Brews in Murray

A new place I luckily stumbled upon is not downtown, in fact it's about fifteen minutes away in Murray on 5300 South and 625 West in the Smith's parking lot at the River View Plaza. Bakery and Brews offers more than just a coffee house. Scrumptious pastries, espressos, hot chocolate, chai tea, organic tea, sandwiches and lunch is served all day in a pleasant environment with comfy couches, surround sound music, television & free WiFi.
Open Mic Nights & Live Music on Weekend Nights. Close to the I-15 ramp, they offer a convenience for coffee lovers on their way to work. Open early seven days-a-week.

The Old Dutch Store
Why am I writing about a deli and European specialty food store that's been around since 1978? Katie's German Potato Salad! Not since my Mom's homemade potato salad, about forty years ago, have I had a potato salad this good. Katie, her mom and staff make it fresh a few times a week. She adds tiny amounts of dill pickle and bacon to her outstanding recipe. I'm getting hungry just typing this. This is not the filler they package at Smith's or Fresh Values, this is worth the price they charge per pound. It's the type of salad you would expect to get at the Little and Grand America Hotels downtown, It's That Good!. Since they only make around 10 lbs at a time, large amounts need to be scheduled in advance. It's a European Deli with groceries, cheeses, and made-to-order sandwiches. Enjoy!
Open 10am - 6pm Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm Saturday, Closed Sundays

Tin Roof Grill in Sandy
Simply Wonderful! A Joy To Dine At! Love The Ever Changing Specials! Some of the reviews that were sent to us. It's obvious that everything is made from scratch and with lots of care. The tapas being created daily is a great way to sample their menu. Offering a variety like pizzas, pastas, salads, and even Thai style noodles. Some of my favorites are the pulled pork sandwich, the lettuce wraps, the pork ribs, they are all fabulous. This is what I enjoy, a wonderful example of a small family owned restaurant where they really care about making great food. There's nothing rushed here, just a relaxed friendly atmoshpere with delicious unique entrees.

Cafe Ahn Hong
Not really new to most of you, but we just found out from friends. I've eaten in China towns in New York City, San Fran, and more, and Salt Lake's Cafe Ahn Hong compares very favorably with the best. Reasonable prices, excellent food, and on any given Saturday you'll find 4-5 generation Chinese families out for brunch. Stay away from the "Americanized" menu and order the delicious dim sum and house specials. Service can be spotty and the furnishings are nothing to look at but you're not there for that. You're there for one of the best chinese meals in Salt Lake, aren't you?

The Copper Onion Restaurant in Salt Lake City Utah
The Copper Onion

The Copper Onion, located in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, next to the Broadway Theatre on 300 South is one of the new additions to the growing Utah "foodie" scene. Former NYC chef (and native Utahn) Ryan Lowder now brings his personal take on New American cuisine to his own kitchen with an approach inspired by his passion for Utah's outstanding farmstead ingredients and his experience as a chef cooking his way through Barcelona, NYC and South America. The Copper Onion serves a wide array of vegetable side dishes and a menu designed to explore and share. An insistent focus on the freshest and best is paramount; sausages and burgers are ground daily, bread is baked and ice cream is made in house, offering casual diners an exceptional experience at affordable prices. visit their website

Lucky 13
HamBurgers Utah Best
Last month, I finally got a chance to stop by and find out for myself what my friends have been telling me. That this bar (yes, a bar, you have to be at least 21 to get in) serves up one of the best burgers you are going to get in Salt Lake! Sure, they have a full bar menu of appetizers, some salads and sandwiches, but every time I have gone back for lunch, everyone there is downing huge burgers. Located a half a block west of Spring Mobile Ballpark, home to our Salt Lake Bees, it looks like other bars with pool tables, plasma TVs, video games, etc. But, what sets this apart from other bars is their focus on really great burgers, and under $10 to boot. And that includes fries and the tax! It has been written that no matter what the fixings, the burger should support a "visceral delight." And Lucky 13's does! These 7 ounces of never-frozen ground chuck are served on local Stoneground buns with plenty of mixed greens and more.

Some of the burgers to try are: the Celestial burger which comes with smoked bacon, grilled onions, cheddar cheese and barbecue sauce or the Big Benny which touts double the meat and double the cheese. I'll start my diet tomorrow. I have had the "Breath Enhancer" Garlic Burger twice now, It is fabulous!. Once the Bees season starts this place is going to be packed before and after the games, but I have a feeling it is going to do well on non-game nights as well. Access from downtown or south valley is easy because the 13th south Trax station which is right there. A 1,400 square foot patio is in the works and should open in the spring and I am told it will come complete with BBQ offerings.
Lucky 13, 135 W. 1300 South, Salt Lake City. 801.487.4418.
The kitchen is open daily from 11am to 8pm and until 11pm on Thursdays to Saturday nights.

Salt Lake City Vietnamese Food
Pho Tay Ho
A Jewel - A Gem...

The Best among the myriad of Pho Restaurants in Salt Lake City. Mi's "Tay Ho" has moved to its new location and has reopened. The new building is actually a restored home at 1766 South Main Street, just one block north of their prior location. Without a doubt, it is my absolute favorite for Pho-Noodle Soup, pronounced Fuh. Tay Ho specializes in it, it is what they do best. One bowl of this soup is a full meal. The steak or brisket will be slightly cooked by the boiling broth to the perfect "medium" by the time the order reaches your table. The Best Pho in Utah!

***Two good friends of ours, Brad and Tee introduced us to this culinary delight and here are Brad's exact words..."There are a few different types of Pho, but in general it consists of thin rice noodles in a basic beef broth. Added to this are onions, cilantro, ginger, and thin slices of beef (steak, flank, brisket), and/or tendon, tripe, or meatballs. Additionally, one is usually provided with a side plate of basil, beansprouts, and lime to add as one wishes. It is also common to add Hoisin (Oyster sauce) and the popular Thai hot sauce Sriracha. The North Vietnamese version usually contains thicker noodles and spring onions.

There is nothing quite like it in the world, and one of the most sensual culinary experiences one can have. Once a bowl is consumed it's hard to deny the drug-like "high" you'll feel as you leave the restaurant. It's also nice that the average bowl of Pho will cost you around 6.00 and that's with tax! 7.00 for a large bowl. Not bad for an exotic, erotic experience that is good for you!"
